Why I'm supporting the Australian Retirement Trust Cardiac Challenge

I’m supporting the Australian Retirement Trust Cardiac Challenge for one simple reason: making a real difference to the lives of people in our community.

So here I go again on this epic and challenging ride. I feel so honoured to be able to contribute again this year with it being my 6th Cardiac and it certainly is going to be a big one on the 20th Anniversary. Super excited to be involved and being part of this special team, Rose’s Riders-Riding for Luke 💙

Rose’s Riders was founded in 2009 in memory of Darren Rose. Darren passed away unexpectedly from a heart condition in June 2009 at the age of 36. So, the original Rose’s Riders team came together that year and rallied to support the Cairns Hospital Cardiac Unit by joining their very first Cardiac Challenge! Since then, Rose’s Riders has been riding annually in Darren’s memory, honouring the unwavering support the unit provided his family during their difficult time.

This year we will ride again in honour of our special Luke, who would love to be riding this 20th year as his dedication and determination every year was unwavering.  Luke joined Rose’s Riders in 2009 at the such a young age of 7 as a supporter. He continued to support the team in 2010 and 2011, and finally, in 2012, his dream of riding the challenge came to reality. By honing his cycling skills at the Cairns Cycling Club, Luke demonstrated his readiness to join as a rider in 2012 at the age of 10. Since then, Luke has faithfully ridden every year, with the exception of 2018 when he had a school commitment. His aspirations reached new heights when he became a pack leader, eventually leading his fellow friends, cyclists, and mentors in pack 1. Tragically, Luke passed away in 2021 while on a training ride.

Luke’s support for the Cardiac Challenge was always there, no matter what! He promised himself he’d ride every year, no matter where he was in the world! Therefore, this year, we are participating in the Cardiac Challenge in Luke’s honour. Some of us will be riding, while others will be supporting or volunteering.

Luke I so wish you could be here with us riding but I know u will be in spirit 🤍 all the way & I will draw on your cycling strength on those hills.

Cardiac issues touch so many of us – whether it’s a family member, a friend, or even ourselves. By supporting this ride, we’re helping fund vital cardiac equipment that saves lives right here in Far North Queensland. Every dollar raised is a step closer to better care, more advanced equipment and improved outcomes for those who need it most.

It’s not just a bike ride – it’s a way to give back to the community, inspire others and show that together we can achieve something incredible. Please join me on this journey – whether it be cheering me on, spreading the word or making a donation. Every little bit helps bring us closer to ensuring everyone in our region has access to the best possible cardiac care.
