Why I’m Taking on the Great Wheelbarrow Race
I’m Brian White, and at 83, I’m not letting Parkinson’s slow me down. Instead, I’m taking on a new challenge - leading the Downunder Movers and Shakers in the Great Wheelbarrow Race this May.
Back in 2009, a cycling accident left me with 17 fractures and a rare skull-base injury that completely separated my midface from my skull. It took multiple surgeries and a long road to recovery, but I wasn’t ready to give up. Then, in 2015, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Another challenge - but not one that would define me.
Instead of slowing down, I’ve found a new purpose. Through this race, I want to:
- Raise awareness for Parkinson’s Disease
- Support the Neurology Department at Cairns Hospital
- Show that age and health challenges don’t limit your ability to make a difference
How You Can Help
I can’t do this alone. You can support our mission by:
- Donating to our team’s fundraising efforts
- Joining the Downunder Movers and Shakers
- Helping improve neurological care in Far North Queensland
The Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation has given me a reason to keep pushing forward, and I’m excited to take on this challenge. Will you join me?
