Volunteer Roles

The QSuper Cardiac Challenge would not be possible without the generous support of our volunteers. 

With a wide range of volunteer roles available, we have something to suit everyone. Take a look at our volunteer roles below to find how you can support us in raising funds for cardiac services in FNQ.

(Pre-Ride) New Participant Liaison and On-ride Guru

Help first-time riders feel confident and excited about the ride!

Description:
Welcome riders with a friendly phone call to thank them for joining, share tips for fundraising, and answer any questions - especially from first-timers. Spark excitement for the event, and provide support during the ride after getting to know the participants.

Skills & Qualifications:
You’re a natural communicator who loves helping people and solving problems. Confidence on the phone and a knack for encouraging others are essential. Sales or call centre experience is a bonus but not required.

*This role will be suited to a person who has previously participated and understands the logistics of the event.

(Pre-Ride) Vehicle Collection, Distribution & Packing

Get the wheels rolling by preparing vehicles for the big event!

Description:
Help collect, pack, and distribute vehicles, including buses, trucks, and utilities, to ensure they’re ready for handover to event drivers. Be part of the action by loading equipment, luggage, and supplies, and assist with unpacking and cleaning vehicles upon their return.

Skills & Qualifications:
You’re hands-on, energetic, and ready to pitch in wherever needed. Following directions is second nature, and you’re comfortable with some lifting (up to 20kg) and standing for periods of time.

Bus Drivers

Take the wheel and safely transport our riders while keeping the ride light-hearted and easy-going!

Description:
Drive either a 25-seater or 12-seater bus (with or without a bike trailer) to transport riders during the event. This includes Kuranda Range uplifts, point-to-point transfers to Cooktown, and the return trip to Cairns, with a brief stop in Mt Molloy. You'll also assist with camp tasks and ensure buses are fuelled and returned to the hire company.

Skills & Qualifications:
You have the appropriate driver licence, are reliable, confident, and self-motivated, with a fun, team-oriented attitude.

Truck Drivers

Drive our trucks with care while ensuring everything runs smoothly behind the scenes!

Description:
Drive a 4-tonne Pantec truck, transporting catering supplies, luggage, and other event equipment to Cooktown and back to Cairns. You’ll also help with camp tasks, troubleshoot any issues, and ensure the vehicle is fuelled and returned. Expect some variety in tasks, with more details provided closer to the event.

Skills & Qualifications:
You have the appropriate driver's licence, are reliable, self-motivated, and love being part of a team. A fun attitude is a must!

Ice Trailer Driver

Keep things cool by delivering ice to where it's needed most!

Description:
Tow a trailer filled with ice, delivering it to the medics and drink stops along the route. Ensure riders stay refreshed and hydrated by providing ice for their water, and assist where needed to keep things running smoothly.

Skills & Qualifications:
You’re reliable, have the appropriate driver's licence and a vehicle with a tow bar and enjoy being part of a team. A positive attitude and flexibility are key for this cool role!

Escort Vehicle Drivers

Be the guardian of the pack, ensuring riders are safe and supported on the road!

Description:
Escort groups of riders (up to 30 cyclists) during the event, ensuring their safety while obeying road rules. You’ll work closely with pack leaders, communicate road or traffic issues, and assist with bike pickups if needed. You'll also interact with riders at drink stops and be part of a supportive team. If using your own vehicle, a fuel voucher will be provided in Cooktown.

Skills & Qualifications:
You’re a safe, confident, and calm driver with an eye for road conditions. A friendly, enthusiastic attitude is key. You have your own suitable vehicle (preferably with good clearance) or can drive a provided vehicle, and UHF radio experience is a bonus. First aid training is a plus but not required.

At Lunch and Camp Venues

Be part of the team that brings the camp to life, making sure everything runs smoothly!

Description:
Help set up and pack down camp and lunch venue equipment, including marquees, tables, barbecues, and wash-up areas. You’ll also ensure portaloos and showers are in working order and assist with any other tasks to keep the camp running smoothly.

Skills & Qualifications:
You’re energetic, hands-on, and ready to get stuck in! You can stand and work for periods of time, lift up to 20kg, and follow directions with ease.

Catering Crew

Serve up the fuel our riders need and make sure the food service runs like clockwork!

Description:
Help set up, present, and re-stock food for breakfasts and lunches, ensuring food safety and hygiene are always followed. You’ll be part of a team preparing fresh fruit or salad, monitoring wristbands to accommodate dietary needs, and keeping the area tidy. You may also assist with evening meals and support our Camp Hosts as needed.

Skills & Qualifications:
You bring a fun, team-focused attitude, are aware of safe food handling practices, and can stand and work for periods of time. Lifting up to 20kg is required, along with a 'roll up your sleeves' approach and the ability to follow directions.

Wellness Embodied Massage / Physiotherapist

Provide essential massage and physiotherapy services to keep our riders feeling their best throughout the event!

Description:
As a staff member of the Wellness Embodied team, you’ll offer massage and physiotherapy support to riders, helping them recover and stay limber during the event. Your services will ensure participants are comfortable and ready to keep moving.

Skills & Qualifications:
This role is only available to employees of Wellness Embodied.

Drink Stop Coordinator

Ensure our riders stay refreshed and hydrated by managing drink stop operations!

Description:
As the Drink Stop Coordinator, you’ll oversee volunteers to ensure each stop is well-stocked, running smoothly, and located correctly along the route. You’ll handle any issues that arise promptly and make sure no rubbish is left behind.

Skills & Qualifications:
You’re a great communicator, energetic, and have a "roll up your sleeves" attitude. You’re comfortable standing for periods of time and lifting up to 20kg. Safe food handling and attention to detail are key, and a good sense of humour goes a long way! First aid training is helpful but not required.

Drink Stop Assistants

Help make every drink stop an energising and fun experience for our riders!

Description:
You’ll help set up and pack down the drink stop stations, including marquees, tables, and water taps. Prepare fruit, electrolyte drinks, sunscreen, and hand sanitiser, and position rider safety signage. Most importantly, you’ll create a fun, lively atmosphere to keep riders refreshed and motivated!

Skills & Qualifications:
You’re energetic, hands-on, and ready to stand and work for periods of time. You can lift up to 20kg, follow directions, and have great attention to detail. Safe food handling and a good sense of humour are a must!

Drink Stop Medics

Ensure the health and safety of our riders by providing care and support at drink stops!

Description:
Coordinated through QHealth Cardiac Unit. As a Drink Stop Medic, you'll be part of the team ensuring rider health and wellbeing during the event. You’ll attend to minor injuries, monitor rider conditions, and provide support as needed at drink stops along the route.

Skills & Qualifications:
This role is only open to Queensland Health employees through nomination by the Nurse Unit Manager.

Drink Stop Utilities Drivers

Deliver essential equipment to ensure drink stops run smoothly and keep our riders hydrated!

Description:
In this role, you'll either drive a ute loaded with water pods, marquees, and tables, or tow a portaloo trailer to the designated drink stop locations. Your job is to make sure all necessary equipment arrives on time and is ready for use by riders and volunteers.

Skills & Qualifications:
You’re a capable driver with a reliable attitude, comfortable with either towing a trailer or transporting equipment. A positive, "can-do" attitude and ability to follow instructions are essential.

Media Team

Capture the excitement and spirit of the event through photography, videography, and more!

Description:
Join the media team and help tell the story of our ride! Whether you're capturing stunning photography, filming dynamic video, conducting interviews, or even flying drones for aerial shots, you’ll be responsible for documenting the event in all its action-packed glory. Your work will help showcase the amazing efforts of our riders, volunteers, and organisers.

Skills & Qualifications:
You’re passionate about capturing moments through various media formats and have experience in photography, videography, or drone operation. A creative eye, technical skills, and the ability to work quickly and flexibly are key for this role.

General Information for All Volunteers

Minimum Age

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to participate in the 2025 QSuper Cardiac Challenge.

If you're between 16 and 18, a parent or guardian will need to complete and sign a parental consent form to confirm your participation.

Please note that, due to licensing restrictions, volunteers under 18 are not eligible for roles involving driving.

We look forward to welcoming young and enthusiastic volunteers to the team!

Accommodation

Accommodation at Mt Carbine and Lakeland is extremely limited, but don't worry - Cooktown offers plenty of options for a comfortable stay.

We also have exclusive access to campgrounds at Mt Carbine, and the school grounds in Lakeland and Cooktown. Whether you’re camping or looking for other options, you'll have a great place to rest between events.

What to Take?

To make sure you're fully prepared and comfortable, here's a list of essentials you'll need to bring:

  • Volunteer Shirt (Pick it up a few days before the ride)
  • Water Bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day
  • Sunscreen & a Hat to protect yourself from the sun
  • Tent & Sleeping Gear (if you're camping—get a good night’s rest!)
  • Toiletries for your personal care
  • Personal Medical Supplies (if needed, to ensure your health is covered)
  • Spending Money for any extra purchases you might want to make along the way

Make sure you’re ready for a great experience! You’ll need all these to stay comfortable and contribute to the success of the event.

Will you get a Volunteer Shirt?

Volunteers confirmed by July 31 will receive a volunteer shirt to wear during the event.

If your participation is confirmed after July 31, volunteer shirts are subject to availability. While we’ll do our best to allocate a shirt closest to your size, please note we may not have your preferred size in stock.

Terms and Conditions

The following are the terms and conditions for volunteering at the 2025 QSuper Cardiac Challenge.

The terms are not negotiable, and by submitting your volunteer registration and agreeing to participate, you are hereby acknowledging your acceptance of the terms and conditions. (For volunteers under 18, a parent or guardian accepts the terms by completing the registration.)

I AGREE TO VOLUNTEER ON THE FOLLOWING BASIS:

1. Commitment to Volunteering
I agree to fulfil my volunteer duties during the event, as outlined in my selected role. I agree to adhere to my assigned shifts, and if I am unable to attend, I will notify the Event Coordinator as soon as possible.

2. Health and Safety
I acknowledge that volunteering at the event involves physical activity and potential exposure to outdoor conditions. I confirm I am in good health, physically capable of participating, and do not have any medical conditions that may affect my safety or the safety of others involved in the event. If I have any medical concerns, I will inform the Event Coordinator prior to my participation.

3. Adherence to Policies and Procedures
I agree to follow all event policies, including safety guidelines, Queensland Road Rules (if applicable to my role), and any directions given by event authorities, including event coordinators, ride officials, or medical staff.

4. Code of Conduct
I commit to maintaining a respectful and professional attitude towards all event participants, other volunteers, and event organisers. I will adhere to a high standard of conduct, showing respect, courtesy, and cooperation at all times. Harassment or inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated.

5. Use of Personal Vehicle (if applicable)
If my volunteer role requires the use of my personal vehicle, I confirm I have a valid driver’s licence and that my vehicle is in good working condition. I also will comply with any specific instructions regarding the use of my vehicle for the event. I understand that if I choose to use my vehicle, I may be eligible for a fuel voucher, as specified by event organisers.

6. Photography and Media
I consent to photographs, videos, and other media being taken of me during the event, which may be used for promotional or event-related purposes. If I do not wish to be included in any media, I will inform the Event Coordinator in advance.

7. Insurance and Liability
I understand that I am covered under the event’s volunteer insurance during official event hours. However, I am responsible for my personal belongings and health insurance, and I acknowledge the event organisers are not liable for any personal injuries or loss of property.

8. Withdrawal
Event organisers reserve the right to withdraw any volunteer from their role if they do not meet the necessary criteria or if their conduct is deemed inappropriate. Volunteers also have the right to withdraw their participation, provided they notify the Event Coordinator as soon as possible.

9. Accommodation and Transportation
I am responsible for my own accommodation and transportation arrangements unless otherwise specified by the event organisers.

10. Parental Consent for Volunteers Under 18
Volunteers under 18 require parental consent, and a parent or guardian must complete and sign a consent form for participation. Volunteers aged 16 or 17 will not be permitted to perform roles that require driving.
