Fundraiser for the Special Care Nursery at Cairns Hospital

On 27th August 2025, we welcomed our identical twin daughters, Medi and Isabel. Due to some complications, they spent the first 19 days of their lives in the Special Care Nursery at Cairns Base Hospital. As we navigated through this time of what having term pre-term babies entails, what could have been an overwhelming nightmare, became a time of support and inspiration from the dedicated team in the Special Care Nursery.

During the time our family was in the care of this amazing team, we witnessed incredible skill and understanding from all of the staff – ensuring that not only did our daughters receive the best possible attention, but that myself, Annie and Cellan were also supported.

Through our experience with the Special Care Nursery we learnt that it services a large geographical area (PNG to Townsville) and has the capacity to care for babies that reach 29 weeks gestation and weigh greater than 1kg. Additionally the team arranges medical transportation for unwell babies and provides ongoing support and care for all the families involved. At present it is funded for 20 beds allowing care to be provided to over 1,000 babies each year. After experiencing the attention and support of such a wonderful team, I asked myself: What can I do to give back?

That’s how the Little Steps 12-Hour Gymathon was born. A day of physical challenge, named by Dr Isabella, who led the delivery of our twins.

This will be a challenge where I will be participating in 12 fitness classes between 5am and 5pm, alternating between CrossTraining and Muay Thai, to raise money for the amazing service that is the Special Care Nursery. As a supporter, you’re invited to:

All funds raised will go toward: 

• New medical equipment to improve care
• Developmental care initiatives and quality improvement activities, such as creating a library for parents to read to their babies
• And many other projects that enhance care for the tiniest patients.
