Taking Cancer Care to the Next Level
The waiting room at the Liz Plummer Cancer Centre is always full. Some sit quietly and contemplate what may lay ahead of them. Others sit together chatting like old friends. All individuals on their own journey but united in their health crisis.
One might be Gemma, the mother of three little boys, who underwent treatment for breast cancer; 74-year-old Rex, diagnosed with bowel cancer eight years ago; or Sarah, a young woman treated for Advanced-Stage Hodgkin Lymphoma. Each on their own cancer journey experiencing individualised treatment protocols.
The Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, in partnership with Queensland Health, will take Cancer Care to the next level to ensure patients such as Gemma, Rex and Sarah receive the best treatment available.
By partnering with Queensland Health, the Foundation will ensure that the $3.4 million project will lessen the need for patients having to travel south for treatment. They will be cared for here at Cairns Hospital Cancer Care Hub, close to those who love them.
As part of the redevelopment, the Oncology Pharmacy in the Liz Plummer Cancer Care Centre will expand, enabling them to produce chemotherapy drugs in-house and ensure treatments are given to patients in a timely manner.
As well, we will provide more chemotherapy treatment chairs, more clinical treatment rooms and build a purpose-designed Cancer Care Ward on Level 2 of D Block at Cairns Hospital. This will incorporate indoor and outdoor family spaces as well. To help us provide these state-of-the-art facilities and give patients like Gemma, Rex and Sarah the best possible care on their journeys, we need your help.
